Well, the 2009-2010 year is quickly coming to a close and in April Kiwanis Uptown will elect its third set of incoming officers. And since you can’t watch us walk it out like an ABDC crew, I thought I’d share some of our favorite memories blog style.Posted by Melissa Deere
Kelly, aka “Chuck Norris”, was one of the first officers of Kiwanis Uptown and stayed on an additional year to serve as the Fundraising VP. When she started she had no knowledge of Kiwanis, but had a great time learning what Kiwanis is all about. She got a great kick out of everyone’s reaction to her Southern Summer Dress. Mind you, it wasn’t the dress itself that got the attention, but rather, the fact that Kelly was wearing one. Yes, Kelly - in a dress. Repeat to be seen at the 2nd Annual Southern Summer event!
Kelly’s also had some fun being one of the smallest (but certainly one of the strongest – see Chuck Norris above) members. At one service event, the guy in charge thought she was too small to do anything. He would look around at the group, size everyone up, and then give out tasks, giving all the big tasks to Mike Clifton, and leaving Kelly to play with the kids. Little did he know!
Jon’s has many favorite memories, both as a Kiwanis Uptown officer and also as a member. His favorite part about being an officer? Food. Well, food and beer. OK, food and beer and wine. All right, in all honesty, it is the food, beer, wine, and fellowship! Getting to know more about everyone else on the board (sometimes more than he ever really wanted to know) was one of Jon’s favorite parts about being an officer. One should know that Val makes mean enchiladas, Bryan makes his own beer and wine (and sterilizes) and Jon makes delish turkey meatballs – which we all learned through our monthly officers meetings. We talk to each other as if we were a family and being an officer has been one of the greatest learning experiences for Jon – both personally and professionally.
As for Bryan’s best memory - well, let’s just say that pretending to help the less coordinated kids at Trips for Kids in an attempt to hide his own lack of coordination is one of his strengths! He also knows his way around a Super WalMart store like no other, which came in handy when we had a last minute adopt-a-family!
Bryan also added that serving as VP of Communications and Marketing really helped him hone in his marketing skills in a way that was very applicable in the professional world. He gained valuable experience experimenting with and using various social media outlets and as he interviewed for jobs, potential employers were very impressed with the relevance of his Kiwanis Officer experience.
We all know that Evelyn loves throwing a party for a good cause, so leading up the charge for our 1st Annual Southern Summer last year was right up her alley. Evelyn was also one of Kiwanis Uptown’s first officers and before becoming President, served as the VP of Marketing. She’s had a great time attending conventions in Nashville and Myrtle Beach this year, where she’s learned more about Kiwanis, gained leadership experience, and polished her public speaking skills by presenting at both conferences – what a great resume builder! She even managed to squeeze in a little partying it up and breaking it down on the dance floor with fellow Kiwanians along the way. And for those that don’t know, Evelyn is a fierce competitor, so it’s no surprise that one of her favorite service projects included dominating air hockey at the Boys and Girls Club. Too bad she often gets whopped by a 4th grader!
When I asked Val about her favorite memory about being the VP of Finance/Administration, I thought she would bust into the “money money money” theme song from The Apprentice. No luck. Then I thought she would mention that awesome picture we took with Yankee Pete at Southern Summer last year. Nope, not that either (it is a great picture, though).
Turns out, Val doesn’t have a favorite memory, but when I pressed her to choose, she defaulted to International Convention in Nashville with Rachel and Evelyn. She said it was awesome to get to know her fellow Kiwanians in a more casual setting (read: trapped in a city far away with a microphone, cowgirl boots and adult beverages). She was also able to network with other Kiwanis members, most notably the Mecklenburg Club, and mentioned something about Sweet Potato Pie. Don’t ask me about the pie, I’m assuming you had to be there.
And though you can’t be in Nashville unless you have access to the DeLorean from Back to the Future (and if you do, we need to talk, I have an eighth grade haircut I need to fix), you can be a part of convention 2010 in Las Vegas - registration is open!
Like Kelly, I had no Kiwanis experience before becoming a member of Kiwanis Uptown, but what an experience it’s been - filled with high fives, dodge ball, big smiles, being goofy, riding bikes, hugs, air hockey, arts and crafts and pee in your pants laughter (literally, but that’s a secret for another blog) – and that’s just with the kids we’ve impacted at Terrific Kids, Boys and Girls Club, Trips for Kids, Key Leader Weekend, Family Promise and at the local Children’s hospital! I’ve made great friends along the way and can’t wait to see what’s next for Kiwanis Uptown. And, as for me, my year as a Kiwanis Officer started being unofficially pinned while losing a beer chugging contest at a pool party to my predecessor, Alec (please forgive the Duke shirt, he knows not what he does).
Though I can’t say I have quite the lively transition planned for the next VP of Service, I can say that it’s been an awesome ride and the incoming officers are sure to leave with an experience they won’t forget!
Officer elections will occur at our April 21st meeting. If you're interested in serving as an officer for the 2010-2011 term, please email Evelyn Hagood at president@kiwanisuptown.org.
